The society presents annually literary awards in eight categories which honour excellence in writing. Judges select 5 finalists and the winner for each of the awards. The society also administers the lieutenant governor's award for literary excellence and the borealis prize: the commissioner of yukon award for literary contribution there is an annual gala to celebrate the finalists and announce the winners.
