Sedgewick & District Municipal Library is a charitable organization based in Sedgewick, Alberta, classified by the CRA under public amenities. It appears on the charity register the way hospitals, universities, and other publicly funded bodies do — to issue tax receipts — rather than as a donation-driven charity in the usual sense. In its fiscal year ending December 31, 2024, it reported $47K in revenue and $52K in expenditures. Spending exceeded revenue that year — the gap came out of reserves.

Its funding that year was roughly 6% from donations, 51% from government. Government funding is the majority of its budget. In 2024, 1 other registered charity reported granting it a combined $1,600.

Compared with 521 public-amenity institutions of similar size, its share of spending on mission — charitable programs plus grants to other charities — ranked above 16% of peers.

In its own words

The sedgewick & district library provides the general public with educational resources with the use of computers to research information on the super-net and inter-net. We continue to run programs for mother and young children as well as for seniors in the community. The past year we have partner-shipped with family services and provided workshops for all ages on mental health and supporting the caregiver and senior abuse. The summer reading program for young people was also very popular this past year.
