Walpole Island First Nation prairies have survived on the basis of 3 000 years of cultural stewardship. Future protection of these prairies will be based on community support of conservation initiatives. Canada’s finest surviving tallgrass prairie is found here. The Foundation sponsored mapping and photographing pocket prairies unknown to science at Walpole Island conducted Band Council and community prairie workshops and sponsored a library of 5 000 professional photographs of endangered prairie ecosystems species and prairie culture at Walpole Island.
