Friends of the Gatineau River is a charitable organization based in Chelsea, Quebec, classified by the CRA under environment. It appears on the charity register the way hospitals, universities, and other publicly funded bodies do — to issue tax receipts — rather than as a donation-driven charity in the usual sense. In its fiscal year ending December 31, 2024, it reported $11K in revenue and $15K in expenditures. Spending exceeded revenue that year — the gap came out of reserves.
Its funding that year was roughly 76% from government, 17% from other charities. Government funding is the majority of its budget. In 2024, 3 other registered charities reported granting it a combined $2,402.
Compared with 28 environmental institutions of similar size, its share of spending on mission — charitable programs plus grants to other charities — ranked above 5% of peers.
Its filed list of directors and trustees shows 6 names.
In its own words
We continue our water quality monitoring program of the Gatineau River for bacteria levels (fecal coliforms) to determine its safety for swimming and other recreational activities. We conduct surveys from the water to gather information about the state of the Gatineau River's shoreline and to document invasive species. We undertake public education initiatives to educate residents and government decision-makers about our work best practices related to environmental management of the river and ways that people can get involved to achieve the long term protection of the river.
