Chilliwack Senior Peer Counsellors is a charitable organization based in Chilliwack, British Columbia, classified by the CRA under relief of the aged. It appears on the charity register the way hospitals, universities, and other publicly funded bodies do — to issue tax receipts — rather than as a donation-driven charity in the usual sense. In its fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, it reported $31K in revenue and $39K in expenditures. Spending exceeded revenue that year — the gap came out of reserves.

Its funding that year was roughly 89% from government. Government funding is the majority of its budget. In 2021, 3 other registered charities reported granting it a combined $6,192.

Compared with 26 seniors' institutions of similar size, its share of spending on mission — charitable programs plus grants to other charities — ranked above 67% of peers.

In its own words

Our program trains seniors to become senior peer counsellors to offer other more isolated seniors someone to talk to and help them understand the choices they can make about issues they face as they age. We visit isolated seniors put on community events for seniors and provide training on issues related to seniors. Since covid some seniors would rather have a weekly phone call instead of a weekly in person visit so we have added this to our program.
