Charles Macdonald House of Centreville Society is a charitable organization based in Centreville, Nova Scotia, classified by the CRA under public amenities. It appears on the charity register the way hospitals, universities, and other publicly funded bodies do — to issue tax receipts — rather than as a donation-driven charity in the usual sense. In its fiscal year ending December 31, 2024, it reported $329K in revenue and $333K in expenditures.
Its funding that year was roughly 92% from government. Government funding is the majority of its budget. In 2024, 1 other registered charity reported granting it a combined $2,476.
Compared with 686 public-amenity institutions of similar size, its share of spending on mission — charitable programs plus grants to other charities — ranked above 84% of peers. Its fundraising cost per donated dollar was higher than 76% of that peer group.
Revenue has grown substantially over its filings on record here, from $42K in 2020 to $329K in 2024. Its filed list of directors and trustees shows 5 names.
In its own words
We offer guided tours during the summer as well as art days. We have 6 board members as well as a volunteer who looks after property landscaping. The volunteer board creates the programming for the summer and helps with the art days that our summer student puts on. We have tried to incorporate more outdoor programming to showcase our building and beautiful property. Volunteer hours for the year were around 3 000 hours.
